Cam Newton: Carolina Panthers quarterback compares team to the Titanic

"Yeah we lost a great player but nevertheless ... the Titanic still has to go..." pic.twitter.com/hSRdLBpepx

Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton compared his team to the Titanic in Sunday's postgame press conference.

Newton met with reporters following the Panthers' 20-17 win against the Atlanta Falcons at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

He completed 13-of-24 passes for 137 yards in the win. He also ran for 86 yards and a touchdown against the Falcons.

After the game, the 2015 NFL MVP was asked about losing wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. Benjamin, a first round pick by the Panthers in the 2014 NFL Draft, was traded to the Buffalo Bills on Halloween.

Benjamin was inactive on Sunday for the Bills. He has 475 yards and two touchdowns on 32 receptions this season. Devin Funchess is now Newton's top receiving target. He had five catches for 86 yards in Sunday's win.

"I feel as if there are some things that he can learn from. Things that I can learn from. Being that he's at a more poignant position. And you know, we are only going to get better. He's taken that leadership role, grabbed it by the horn and told everybody in that position room: 'listen, this is what we've gotta do.' these are our expectations. Nobody is even given us an opportunity

"Yeah, we just lost a great player, but nevertheless the Titanic still has to go."

The Titanic sank in 1912, killing more than 1,500 people after hitting an iceberg.

Benjamin played two full seasons with Newton, but was injured in 2015 and missed the season.

After Benjamin was traded, Newton took to Instagram.

"Some things you will never understand," Newton wrote on a caption featuring himlef and Benjamin celebrating at a practice. "I miss my dogs."

It's not exactly fair to compare the Panthers to a sinking ship. Carolina sits at 6-3, good for second place in the NFC South. The Panthers trail the New Orleans Saints for the division lead. Carolina hosts the Miami Dolphins at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13.
